A therapy dog is a well-mannered and very affectionate dog who provides comfort and
support to people in hospitals, schools, nursing homes and more. Therapy dogs can be
any size and any breed. The most important characteristic of a therapy dog is his
temperament. These dogs are friendly, confident, well-adjusted and obedient in all
situations.
The process of becoming a therapy dog starts with an evaluation of your dog's
temperament. Florence, our owner, will work with you one-on-one in private training
to teach you and your dog what you need to know to pass the Therapy Dog
Certification Test. Dogs must know how to:
1) Sit 6) Greet another dog on leash
2) Down 7) Be at ease in his owner's absence
3) Stay 8) Enjoy being pet by a stranger
4) Leave it 9) Disregard food on the floor
5) Come 10) Allow grooming
...and do all of this with high levels of distraction!
Therapy dogs must not show any signs of aggression and may not have any sort of bite
history. They must be at least 1 year old at test time.
Call today to get started on the rewarding path to owning and volunteering your time
with a therapy dog.
